Having very recently discovered an old BBC Micro favourite, Hunt the Wumpus (a text based game that involves hunting the aforementioned Wumpus through a maze like setting, and one that could be beaten ridiculously easily by simply firing an arrow off at random and skewering the stupid beast), I began to get a hankering for text based adventuring. I miss the descriptions of the locations, the single letter directions and ‘Syntax Error’ appearing every time you tried the phrase ‘Pick up object’.

And it got me thinking; would other games work as text games?

The obvious answer is, no, but I’m willing to ignore the obvious and give it a try.

Modern Warfare 2

You are in a room. 2 sets of metal steps, one to the east and one to the west, lead up to a metal gangway. In front of you is a large orange motorised scissor lift. It is not functional. To the south is a large open……..You have been killed by Iisdabruvva223.

You respawn out in the open. In front of you is a large reddish tank used for holding flammable gases. The exits are to the west and north. A player approaches, he is holding an AK47. The red tag above his head shows you that his name is…….you have been stabbed by kevinrulez8.

You have respawned alongside a skip that appears to be full of rubble. A soldier approaches.
>Fire gun
You fired your gun. You missed.
You have been killed by a frag grenade thrown by…..are you sure you want to quit?: Y/N

Super Mario Bros

You are in what appears to be a garden. In the distance you can see a large green pipe sticking out of the ground. Your only exit appears to be forwards. There is a large mushroom here.
>Take mushroom
You pick up the mushroom. As you take it, it vanishes and you discover that you have now grown to twice your original height. You are alarmed to discover that you still sport a moustache. Approaching you is a small, brown creature.
>Jump on creature.
I’m sorry, I do not understand your request. Approaching you is a small, brown creature.
>Jump
I’m sorry, I do not understand your request. Approaching you is a small, brown creature.
>U
You go up. Your journey up is shortlived as gravity takes hold of you and drags you back down again. As you come down you mash the small brown creature with both feet. It explodes, leaving behind it a large gold coin and a faint smell of mould.

Portal

You are in a room. A platform sits atop a column to the east. On the platform is a cube. To the north of you is a large red button set into the ground. A robotic voice, emitted from an unseen source, explains that she is happy that you are alive, and mentions cake. You are holding the Apeture Science Portal gun.
>N
You go north. The large red button is now at your feet. The platform is now behind you to the east and a pool of stagnant water is now sitting to the west.
>press button
I’m sorry, I do not understand that command. You go north. The large red button is now at your feet. The platform is now behind you to the east and a pool of stagnant water is now sitting to the west.
>fire portal gun
You fire the portal gun. A blue flash jets from the muzzle of the weapon and witin milliseconds a large blue oval appears on the opposite wall. Its surface shimmers like water.
>Fire orange portal
I’m sorry, I do not understand that command.
>Fire portal gun
You fire the portal gun. A blue flash jets from the muzzle of the weapon and witin milliseconds a large blue oval appears on the opposite wall. Its surface shimmers like water.
>Take cube
You can’t reach it.
>jump
You jump. Was it fun?
Are you sure you want to quit? Y/N

OK, so maybe only a certain level of game works as a text based adventure, but it was worth a shot.

Now, go away, I have a wumpus to kill.

Bats nearby!
You are in room 1
Tunnels lead to N, S and E
Shoot, Move or Quit (S-M-Q)?
>S

You shoot. Congratulations, you killed the Wumpus. Are you sure you want to quit? Y/N
